Web Reader reads web pages aloud with text-to-speech, highlighting each sentence as it is spoken, with optional AI voices and translation. This policy explains what data the Web Reader website (webs.listenyun.com) and the Web Reader Chrome extension collect, why, and who processes it. We designed Web Reader to collect as little as possible: your free browser-voice reading happens entirely on your device.
When you create an account, our authentication provider (Clerk) stores your email address and sign-in credentials. We keep your email and an account identifier to operate your account and, if you subscribe, link it to your plan. We never see or store your password.
Paid subscriptions are handled by Stripe. Stripe processes your card details directly — we never receive or store your full payment information. We keep only a Stripe customer identifier and your current plan and subscription status.
When you use the Natural (AI) voice or translation, the text of the page you asked to read is sent to our server and on to Google (the Gemini API) to generate the spoken audio or the translated text, then returned to you. This happens only for the pages and moments you actively choose. Pages read with the free on-device browser voice are nottransmitted to us — that speech is produced by your own browser. We do not use your page content to train models, and we do not retain it beyond what is needed to serve the request and short-lived caching of a translation so replaying the same page doesn't re-translate it.
When a read is served, we record a minimal event — whether the browser or AI voice was used, the number of characters, whether the source was pasted text or a URL, a timestamp, your IP address, and a randomly generated device identifier stored in a cookie. We use these to enforce fair-use and free-tier limits (for example, the 3-reads-per-day free allowance), prevent abuse, and understand aggregate usage. We do not record the browsing history of pages you visit without invoking Web Reader.
Your settings — theme, playback speed, and preferred voices per language — are saved so they persist across sessions. On the website they are stored with your account; in the extension they are stored in Chrome's extension storage and synced across your signed-in Chrome profiles.
The extension follows the same principles, with a few specifics:
We do not sell your data or share it for advertising. We use a small set of service providers strictly to operate Web Reader:
Each processes data only to provide its service to us. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and service.
We keep account, subscription, and settings data for as long as your account is active. Usage events are retained for a limited period for abuse prevention and aggregate analytics. Page text sent for AI voice or translation is used to serve your request and not stored long-term (translations may be briefly cached to avoid repeat work). When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize the associated data, except where we must retain records to meet legal or accounting obligations.
We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and reputable providers for authentication and payments. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and limit what we collect.
Web Reader is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by a new effective date at the top of this page.
